Audi e-tron FE04 Formula E race car unveiled, gets a single-speed gearbox

After the shocking announcement that Audi will officially terminate its involvement in Le Mans series to channel their resources to Formula E last year, the four rings has finally unveiled its first all-electric race car, the Audi e-tron FE04.

Audi has partnered up Schaeffler to develop a completely new electric powertrain consisting of the electric motor, transmission, suspension and software. For the 2017/2018 season, Team Audi Sport ABT Schaeffler will be using a high-efficiency single-speed transmission.

“Together with our technology partner Schaeffler, we have developed a completely new powertrain,” says Head of Audi Motorsport Dieter Gass. “You can immediately tell this by looking at the new carbon housing of the powertrain. The car also sounds different because we’re pursuing new avenues in technology.”

The new Audi e-tron FE04 will make its race debut at the Formula E season opener in Hong Kong on December 2, 2017. Seeing that Audi is going down the electrification route as well as Audi Sport models, the innovations and technologies obtained from Formula E will most definitely trickle down to regular road-going models. Excited for Audi’s next-generation of hybrids yet?
