Mercedes-Benz has revealed the new S-Class Coupe and S-Class Cabriolet – unmistakable denominations of luxury grand tourers. They will bear the S 560 Coupe and Cabriolet badges with a V8 biturbo engine with an additional S 450 variant housing a V6 power plant.
The S-Class Coupé and Cabriolet’s external silhouette features front aprons with chrome-plated front splitter and large air inlets. Its dynamic looks are enhanced by restyled side skirts and chrome-plated twin tailpipe trims with a V12 look. The new pair also features the new innovative OLED tail lamps with a total of 66 ultra-flat OLED’s that projects a floating effect, forming a unique day and night display.
Inside you get a choice between three new trim lines; high-gloss brown burr walnut wood, satin-finish grey ash wood and flowing lines designo magnolia wood as well as three different upholstery options which include designo Exclusive nappa leather AMG Line Plus porcelain/tizian red, designo Exclusive nappa leather porcelain/tizian red and designo Exclusive nappa leather AMG Line Plus Bengal red/black – a mouth full to read out indeed!
The interior also stands out with two new 12.3-inch high-resolution and brilliant displays that blend into a Widescreen Cockpit. The all-digital cockpit offers three visually very different styles – Classic, Sporty and Progressive. Both the Coupe and Cabriolet comes with the DISTRONIC system and Touch Control Buttons behind the wheel that responds to swiping motions much like the screen of a smartphone.
Now you can even use the voice command feature to dictate the vehicle’s functions such as the air-conditioning, seat heating, ambient lighting with up to 450 individual voice commands. A new Concierge Service plays hosts to a list of personal services from making restaurant reservations to gathering information on various events and obtaining tips on exciting, scenic routes.
There is also an ENERGIZING comfort control system which creates a specific environment utilising the climate control system, heating system and lighting fixtures to tailor to the mood desired. They consists of Freshness, Warmth, Joy, Comfort, Training and Vitality. It also comes with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity and wireless charging.
New driving assistance systems include Active Distance Control DISTRONIC and Active Steering Assist which now provides even more support for the driver in steering and maintaining safe distances. Also aiding the driver is the AIRMATIC semi-active air suspension featuring infinitely variable damping control.
Lastly, the most juicy bit – performance figures. The V8 biturbo engine in both the Coupe and Cabriolet is claimed to be one of the world’s most economical V8 petrol engines and consumes up to eight percent less than its predecessor. A CAMTRONIC valve-lift adjustment system is available only in the Coupe which, under partial load, deactivates four cylinders out of the eight to improve engine efficiency. The output from the new V8 stands at 469 hp and 700 Nm of torque with the V6 unit in the S 450 outting out 367 hp.
