This Toyota Avanza rival is called… the Mitsubishi Expander

So it has finally come to this, eh? Well, Mitsubishi’s latest endeavour, the Mitsubishi Expander, is an affordable MPV that will find its way to markets like Indonesia in the near future. It will go up against the Toyota Avanza, one that’s currently dominating the segment.

It looks a lot like the XM Concept with the Dynamic Shield front fascia, slim headlights and enormous fog lamps. It’s no longer a crossover between an MPV and an SUV because they’ve done away with the roof rails from the concept. It’s now a full-fledged seven-seater MPV.

It measures at 4,475 mm in length, 1,750 mm in width, 1,700 mm tall and has a ground clearance of 205 mm. Overall, it’s longer and wider than the Avanza. Mitsubishi is particularly proud of their cabin design, promising “excellent access to the comfortable third-row seats”.

The 1.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine with Mitsubishi Innovative Valve timing Electronic Control (MIVEC) is tasked to move the vehicle. Power is transferred to the front wheels either through a five-speed manual or four-speed automatic. No performance stats have been mentioned so far.

The Mitsubishi Expander will be headlining Mitsubishi’s entry at the upcoming 2017 GAIKINDO Indonesia International Auto Show (GIIAS). So, fancy yourself one of the Expanders?
