Volkswagen Polo GTI Mk6 debuts, 2.0L turbo, 197 hp & 6-speed manual!

During the grand unveiling of the Volkswagen Polo Mk6, Volkswagen AG introduced its hotter twin, the Polo GTI. Now armed with a larger 2.0-litre TSI with more power, Sports Chassis and all the new-generation features, the Polo GTI may be all you need and more.

Mechanically, Volkswagen has retired the old 1.8-litre TSI engine in favour of a 2.0-litre TSI unit that churns out 197 hp – 8 hp more than the previous mill. Power is sent to the front wheels through a seven-speed DSG or a six-speed manual transmission. Unfortunately, key performance figures remain unknown for the time being but the previous Polo sprints to 100 km/h in 6.7 seconds with a top speed of 236 km/h. This new Polo GTI also gets a more dynamic Sports Chassis to complement the high output powertrain.

Visually, the GTI differs itself through the honeycomb grille with a strikeout red stripe (this extends into the headlamps), optional LED headlamps, larger black spoiler, rear diffuser, twin exhaust outlet and 17-inch alloys (upgradable to 18-inch), side sill extensions and red brake callipers.

Inside, the GTI gets ‘Clark’ tartan pattern sport seats, leather wrapped multi-functional sports steering wheel, red stitching, black ceiling upholstery, ambient lighting and GTI gearstick.

Like the rest of the Polo Mk6 range, the GTI is expected to go on sale end-2017. More information will be revealed in the coming weeks. There was a time when Volkswagen Malaysia had the Polo GTI Mk5 officially on sale. Now with the Mk6, do you think Volkswagen Passenger Cars Malaysia (VPCM) should revive the Polo GTI nameplate and take the fight to the likes of the Peugeot 208 GTI and Ford Fiesta ST once again?
