BMW 1 Series LCI gets minor sporty updates, last ever RWD 1 Series

The BMW 1 Series is currently the only rear-wheel drive vehicle in its class, but the next-generation model will be a front wheel drive, just like MINI. Before that day comes, BMW has gone on to unveil the updated F20 1 Series LCI.

Three new exterior trims now join the lineup – Edition Sport Line Shadow, Edition M Sport Shadow and BMW M140i Edition Shadow. Each “Shadow” edition includes a black kidney grille, black inserts in the LED headlights and darkened LED rear lights. Two new exterior colours – Sunset Orange and Seaside Blue – are also offered, but both are optional.

Inside, all 1 Series models gain an updated instrument binnacle to complement the updated dashboard with new trimming inserts. It receives BMW’s latest iDrive system which has touchpad integrated into the controller and an updated user interface. The 8.8-inch touchscreen that supports navigation with voice control is available with an added cost.

Nothing under the bonnet has been changed, so you get the same choice of engines depending on which part of the world you live in. The top of the line M140i gets a 3.0-litre straight-six engine with BMW TwinPower Turbo technology to produce 340 hp and 500 Nm of torque. A six-speed manual or eight-speed automatic can be had.

You can have this 1 Series in either three- or five-door configuration by July 2017. Back at home, BMW Malaysia is only selling the 118i petrol (1.5-litre turbo) and it’s available in two different trims: 118i M Sport (RM188,800.00) and 118i Sport (RM176,800.00).
