BMW M550i xDrive is the range-topping G30 5 Series… for now

Catering to those who would rather not be seen driving a diesel, the BMW M550i xDrive is the revvier and sweeter-smelling sibling to the M550d xDrive. Unlike the oil burning sibling, the petrol M550i xDrive uses a bigger 4.4-litre V8 twin-turbo.

Until the next M5 is unveiled, the M550i xDrive sits at the top of the G30 5 Series range. The twin-turbo V8 develops 462 hp and 650 Nm, while an eight-speed automatic is on duty to send power to the rear-biased xDrive all-wheel drive system. Nought to 100 km/h time is clocked in 4.0 seconds, and the M550i will go on to its electronically-limited top speed of 250 km/h.

The M Sport kit comes as standard, which include M Sport brakes with blue callipers, M Sport suspension that reduces ride height by 10 mm and a set of 19-inch wheels. Options include bigger 20-inch wheels, Active Cruise Control (ACC) and Lane Keeping Assistant, and Remote Parking System where owners can park the car using the key fob as a remote.

Like the M550d xDrive, this high-powered beast will not likely be launched here in Malaysia. Currently there’s only a single variant of the G30 5er that you can buy here and it’s the 530i M Sport for just under RM400k.
