Subaru Impreza edges Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution as Japan’s Most Iconic Rally Hero!

McLaren vs Ferrari. Ford Mustang vs Chevrolet Camaro. Ford Falcon vs Holden Commodore. Those automotive greatest rivalries probably couldn’t match the magnitude of these two closely fought super sedans from the land of the rising sun – Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution and Subaru Impreza.

Although both cars are no longer competing in the current World Rally stage, they fought again in an online poll conducted by Europe’s biggest annual Japanese Car Show, the JapFest which will be held late this month in Silverstone, UK.

During the tightly contested poll, the Impreza emerged as the winner, narrowly beating its rival by a paper-thin margin. The Impreza received 50.95% of the total votes, compared to the Lancer’s 49.05%. This signifies the rivalry between these two rally heroes is still strong to this day, even though this particular battle was determined via the click of the mouse button.

The poll was done in conjunction of the JapFest event where car clubs from both camps are invited to set the fastest time on the Silverstone Handling Course.

Currently, the Subaru Impreza still remains in production while the Mitsubishi Lancer had met its demise. With supermini hatchbacks are the main foray in world rallying, the days of all-wheel drive sedans powered by 2.0-litre turbocharged engines are nothing but a distance memory.
