When Nasim launched the 2008 back in 2014, it was literally in a class of its own. At a time before the Honda HR-V and Mazda CX-3 were even here, Peugeot had a tough time selling the idea of a crossover to Malaysians. Maybe this time the Pug has a better fighting chance.
Like before, the 2008 is available in just one variant. It gets minor updates inside and out like the 208 facelift and shares the same turbocharged 1.2-litre engine. Priced at RM110k, could this French kid give the Japanese a run for its money? Let’s find out.
|Name||Peugeot 2008 PureTech|
|Engine||1,199cc; turbocharged 3-cylinder|
|Max Power||110 hp @ 5,500 rpm|
|Max Torque||205 Nm @ 1,500 rpm|
New to the 2008 are the larger front grille with a centre mounted Lion’s badge, redesigned front bumper as well as a new set of 17-inch alloys wrapped in 205/50 profile Goodyear EfficientGrip tyres. The rest remain unchanged.
The interior dittos the preceding 2008, beginning with the Peugeot i-Cockpit, 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system, six-speaker Arkamys 3D audio sound system, dual-zone automatic climate control, leather wrapped multifunctional steering wheel, fabric upholstery and a panoramic roof.
Under the hood, it gets a new 1.2-litre turbocharged three-cylinder PureTech that produces a healthy 110 hp and 205 Nm of torque. Drive is sent to the front wheels via an Aisin sourced six-speed slush box. If you’re concerned that this puny 1.2-litre might not be sufficient to carry its own weight, mind you that the larger displacement CX-3 only pushes out 204 Nm.
As far as safety goes, the 2008 is among the best in class with six airbags, ABS with EBD, BA, ESC, Anti-Skid Regulation (ASR), hill-start assist and ISOFIX mounting points. It even boasts a full 5-star Euro NCAP safety rating.
Keen owners of the 2008 can have their car finished in four colours – Digital White, Ultimate Red, Emerald and Artense Grey. Like the 208, it comes with a 5-Year or 120,000 km (whichever comes first) warranty together with 3-Year complimentary 24-hour Peugeot Roadside Assistance, access to Peugeot Lounge at Subang Airport and Peugeot Privilege membership. First 100 buyers of the 2008 will also receive a 3-Year service package.
