SpyBuzz: Next-gen Volkswagen Polo is more spacious, more powerful

The current Volkswagen Polo, in its fifth-generation guise, has been around for seven years, and that calls for a dire replacement for Volkswagen’s volume seller. The sixth-generation Polo has quite a few things to live up to, and what we have here is a set of camouflaged photos courtesy of AutoExpress UK.

Based on the all-new MQB AO platform (Volkswagen’s smallest platform), the Germans are seeking to ace in interior quality, infotainment and connectivity with the new Polo. This camouflaged mule was snapped in Death Valley, California, and gives us a relatively clear look on the overall shape of the car.

A source from AutoExpress also revealed that the new Polo will have a wider wheelbase of 2,560mm, a 90mm increase over its predecessor. This could directly translate to better cabin space (the Japanese is miles ahead on this now) and increased legroom for the rear passengers. Also new to the cabin is a touchscreen head unit that supports Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

In the powertrain department, the entry-level Polo will be powered by a 1.0-litre three-cylinder petrol engine. One naturally aspirated and two turbocharged variants of the same engine are in the pipeline, producing 75 hp, 100 hp, and 115 hp respectively. The 1.4-litre petrol and 1.6-litre diesel are will also be offered, meaning the outgoing 1.2-litre TSI unit powering the Vento could be discontinued. Transmission options will include a standard six-speed manual and seven-speed dual clutch DSG.

The new Polo should go on sale by mid-2017. Back at home, the locally assembled Polo with a 1.6-litre MPI engine and six-speed automatic can be had from RM76,888.00.
