Mercedes-Benz to create EV division, rivalling BMW i and Tesla Motors

You may or may not know that the beastly Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG had an electric twin, the SLS AMG Electric Drive. It was a short-lived affair because not too long after its inception, pure electric cars bearing the Mercedes-Benz logo just quietly disappeared.

Then suddenly, Mercedes plans to have a full fleet of electric cars. According to Bloomberg, Mercedes are able to justify the business proposition of offering electric cars to the mass market. Plans are in progress to add two electric SUVs and two electric sedans. The new electric line-up is set to be marketed under a sub-brand, similar to how the i-Division is to BMW.

With the technology for electric vehicles becoming more readily available (on top of tightening emissions regulations), the time is right to introduce electric vehicles that are profitable. Daimler’s trucks chief, Wolfgang Bernhard also mentioned that there are plans in the pipeline to introduce fully electric trucks in the next 10 years. We will know more information about these plans come September at the Paris Motor Show.
