UMW Toyota Motor invests RM2 bil for a new plant in Klang, ready in 2019

In a move to support the National Automotive Policy’s (NAP) objective to develop Malaysia as the regional automotive hub in Energy Efficient Vehicles (EEV), UMW Toyota Motor (UMWT) is investing some RM 2 billion on their upcoming manufacturing plant that will mainly focus on the production of Toyota passenger cars, including EEV.

Construction of the new factory will commence in second half of this year and expected to start its operation in early 2019, where the assembly of Toyota passenger cars will be gradually shifted there from the current Assembly Services Sdn Bhd (ASSB) plant in Shah Alam. At the same time, the Shah Alam plant will be geared for the production of Toyota commercial vehicles only.2016-umw-toyota-plant-1

The new 670,000 square meter plant will be constructed in Bukit Raja Industrial Estate and it will be equipped with advanced production technology to reflect Toyota’s ultimate goal to establish “Simple, Slim, and Flexible” plants around the world. Its initial production is targeted at 50,000 units per year, which will bring UMWT’s local production to a total of 90,000 to 100,000 units annually from both plants.

This is by far UMWT’s biggest investment to date. “The time has come for us to take a big leap forward and propel our production quality to the next level and the best way is to build an entirely new manufacturing plant.”, said UMW Group chairman, Tan Sri Asmat Kamaludin.2016-umw-toyota-plant-2

“We are grateful to our joint-venture partner, Toyota Motor Corporation, for their support and willingness to proceed with this important project which is seen as a move to strengthen our commitment to meet future customers’ demand in Malaysia.”, he added.
