Volkswagen Golf 1.4 TSI gets more power and better kit, cheaper too

Volkswagen Malaysia has introduced the updated Golf 1.4 TSI, and customers can now choose between two trims – Comfortline and Highline. They cost RM149,888 and RM159,888 respectively, both cheaper than the RM163,888 asking price prior to this update.

The Comfortline trim carries essentially the same kit from before, but opt for the Highline and you’ll get some added features like Keyless Entry with Push Start, Park Assist and Rest Assist, Fatigue Detection System, 17-inch five-spoke Madrid wheels (as seen in the picture above) and a new pair of LED tail lights, just like the Golf R‘s, except it’s not smoked.

The Golf R’s LED tail lamps are smoked, thus appear darker than those on the Golf 1.4 TSI Highline

Inside the cabin, the Highline trim gets new sport seats with “Mel Stripe” fabric upholstery while retaining the same 6.5-inch touchscreen head unit. The rest of the equipment kit here are as before – six airbags, multifunction steering wheel with paddle shifters and eight speakers.

If you’re looking for more firepower then good news because both trims will benefit from a more powerful engine; the 1.4-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine now makes 148 hp from (5,000 to 6,000 rpm) instead of 138 horses, but torque figures remain the same at 250 Nm, peaking from 1,500 to 3,500 rpm. Only one transmission is offered, and it’s the same seven-speed dual clutch auto.

Again, the Comfortline is priced at RM149,888 and the Highline costs RM159,888. Both are not inclusive of insurance, by the way. If you’re in the market for a car in this price bracket, the Ford Focus EcoBoost makes for a very compelling alternative and costs RM139,888 for the highest specced Sport+ variant. If you’re not in a rush, then hang on to that dough and wait for the new Honda Civic to make its Malaysian debut.
