2016 Mitsubishi Outlander previewed, priced at RM167k [+Video]

After announcing its arrival last December, Mitsubishi Motors Malaysia (MMM) has finally unveiled their flagship SUV, the Mitsubishi Outlander. This Nissan X-Trail rival is offered in one flavour only – a 2.4-litre four-wheel drive automatic.

It won’t be available until its official arrival in April, but the RM166,720.00 (without insurance) seven-seater SUV is currently open for booking and viewing at a roadshow near you (complete list below). The Outlander dons Mitsubishi’s latest Dynamic Shield look, and it looks every bit as handsome as it does in pictures.2016 Mitsubishi Outlander Launch - AutoBuzz.my

On the outside, the Outlander gets full LED headlamps with LED daytime running lights as standard. It sits on 18-inch dual-tone alloy wheels and gets just three paint schemes – Red Metallic, White Pearl and Grey Metallic.2016 Mitsubishi Outlander Launch - AutoBuzz.my

There’s also keyless entry and push-start button, electronically folding side mirrors, roof rails, electric tailgate and rear wiper.

INTERIOR

The cabin is finished in black only and is leather upholstered. The use of leather is also extended to the multifunction steering wheel, and behind it are the paddle shifters. Cruise control comes as standard here, and the controls are built into the steering wheel.

Move your eyes to the centre and you’ll find the 7-inch touchscreen head unit which doubles as the display for the rear view camera. It also supports iPod, Bluetooth and USB compatibility. Below it are the controls to the dual-zone air conditioning, and overhead is the electric sunroof. Both front seats can be heated, but there’s no option for cool air ventilation. If you’re wondering why, just remember that the Outlander is fully imported (CBU) from Japan.2016 Mitsubishi Outlander Launch - AutoBuzz.my

Both the second and third row bench fold flat; the former has a 40:20:40 split whereas the latter features a 50:50 split configuration. Up to 1,608 litres of cargo space can be freed with the seats folded flat, and this practicality is complemented with an electric tailgate. Both benches however, are manually operated. There’s also a centre armrest built into the second row seat that has two cup holders.

PERFORMANCE

Under the hood is a sole 2.4-litre four-cylinder MIVEC engine. There’s no turbocharging or supercharging technology here, but it’s good for 166 horsepower and 222 Nm of torque. Drive is sent to all four wheels via the improved INVECS-III Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT), and the 4WD system is electronically operated through Mitsubishi’s multi-select 4WD system, offering three different modes – 4WD ECO, 4WD Auto and 4WD Lock.2016 Mitsubishi Outlander Launch - AutoBuzz.my

MMM says when 4WD ECO is selected, most of the power will be sent to the front wheels to maximise fuel efficiency. This yields a commendable 12.8 km per litre of fuel! However, power will be automatically channeled to all four wheels when slip is detected.

SAFETY

Here, the Outlander is fitted with seven airbags, Active Stability and Traction Control, Hill-Start Assist, ABS with EBD, Brake Assist, auto headlights and automatic rain sensors. The SUV’s entire body is strengthened through Mitsubishi’s Reinforced Impact Safety Evolution (Rise body), and together with the Collapsible Steering Column should minimise injuries in the event of an accident.2016 Mitsubishi Outlander Launch - AutoBuzz.my

WHAT ELSE?

As mentioned earlier, the event today was just a preview of the Outlander, but bookings can be placed ahead of its official arrival sometime in April. Just one trim will be available, and at RM166,720, it surely is a worthy alternative to the popular Nissan X-Trail. One thing to take note is, the RM167k price tag you’re seeing here is offered – for a limited time only – as an introductory price. So first come, first served!

Mitsubishi Motors Malaysia is also optimistic on the Outlander’s potential, and plans to shift about 100 units of the SUV every month. Catch the 2016 Mitsubishi Outlander in person at these roadshows below:
