VW launches new engines and infotainment on the Sharan

Volkswagen AG has just announced that the facelifted Sharan will be getting a new range of more efficient diesel and petrol engines, as well as new networking features that are iOS and Android compatible.

The premium seven-seater people carrier is now in its second generation and contends with the likes of BMW 220i Gran Tourer and the Mercedes-Benz B-Class. It takes to the table a new set of tweaked engines and an infotainment system to keep the kids busy.

The oily bits are tweaked in order to make it more efficient and as a result, two TSI and three TDI engines are afforded the change. Both updated TSI mills produce 147 hp and 216 hp respectively, up by almost 20 hp for the pair. The former engine achieves a fuel consumption rating of  6.4 litres per 100km when mated to a six-speed manual transmission.

On the other hand, the TDI trio pumps out 113 hp and 147 hp – up by 10 hp each while the 181 hp oil burner gains 7 hp in total. Fuel efficiency, as goes without saying, is an impressive 5.0 litres per 100km achieved with a six-speed manual transmission.

With the exception of the smallest diesel lump, all engines can be mated to an automatic six-speed dual clutch gearbox or DSG, which now comes with a ‘coasting’ function that essentially reduces drag when your right foot is off the throttle pedal.

The Sharan is also more connected with systems such as Android Auto for Google and Car Play from Apple Inc. Both systems allow the driver and passengers to use App-Connect and feed the apps directly onto the 5 or 6.5-inch displays. The sat-nav can even be mirrored to a tablet via Wi-Fi.

The Sharan comes also with 9 airbags, Blind Spot Monitor, Adaptive Cruise Control and a first for this model – City Emergency Braking system which is active up to 30 km/h. The Sharan is scheduled to go on sale in Europe in July.
