McLaren unwraps the new 570S Coupe at the New York International Motor Show

Famed British supercar manufacturer McLaren is going one down here by revealing their ‘baby’, the 570S Coupe in an attempt to take on the likes of the Audi R8, Porsche 911 and Mercedes-AMG GT. The base McLaren, if you can even call it that, is made to be more accessible and a practical everyday sports car and is the brand’s first venture into the upper end of the sports car market.

This move sees McLaren giving the lower-priced but higher-volume sports car category a run for its money, but the 570S is apparently not alone in this assault because the company confirmed that a ‘lesser’ 540C model is in the pipeline. The 570S, priced at USD184,900 (est. RM670k) a pop, it’s typically compared to the similarly priced Porsche 911 Turbo S which is only USD2,200 cheaper than the Mac.McLaren 570S Coupe (10)

So where does the 570S sit when you’ve got the 650S and P1 to choose from? The answer – McLaren’s Sport Series, one of the brand’s three-tier model strategy with the other two being the Super Series and Ultimate Series. Simply put, the Sport Series will feature models like the 540C and 570S, whereas the 650S and 675 LT fit snugly in the Super Series while the P1 is, well, the ultimate thing that needs no introduction.McLaren 570S Coupe (7)

Details are fairly similar here, as the 570S gets the same 3.8-litre twin turbo V8 engine that’s made with over 30 percent new components. As the name suggest, it makes 570PS or 562 hp at 7,400 rpm and 600 Nm of torque from 5,000 rpm to 6,500 rpm. It weighs 1,313kg thanks to extensive use of carbon fibre, and boasts a class’ best power-to-weight ratio of 428 hp per tonne.

Transmission choice is the same seven-speed Sequential Shift Gearbox, sending all that power to the rear wheels. The 570S is capable of sprinting from standstill to 100 km/h in 3.2 seconds, 0 to 200 km/h in 9.5 seconds while managing a top speed of 328 km/h. Carbon ceramic brakes are standard in this model, fitted behind 19-inch wheels at the front and 20-inch wheels at the back. The front is wrapped with 225/35R19 series tyres while the rear gets 285/35R20 profile P Zero Corsa tyres.

Dubbed as the most usable McLaren to date, this car could prove to be your ideal daily driver as much attention has been given to make this car comfortable. As such, the sport seats are upholstered in premium grade leather as standard, as with the dashboard and flat-bottomed steering wheel. Oh, the seats are six-way power adjustable as well, while the passenger gets a four-way power adjuster.McLaren 570S Coupe (15)

Also new to this Mac is a TFT digital instrument cluster that changes its configuration depending on driving mode. At the centre, you get a vertically mounted 7-inch touchscreen head unit with climate control functionality and Bluetooth connectivity. To keep the weight down, only four speakers will come as standard, although customers can still opt for McLaren’s Audio Plus 8-Speaker Upgrade System or the Bowers and Wilkins 12-Speaker Premium Audio System with 1,280W surround sound upgrade.

Developed in conjunction with technical Partner, AkzoNobel, the 570S Coupé is available in a total of 17 colours: three Standard, six Special and eight Elite shades. Among these are four newly formulated colours – Ventura Orange, Vermillion Red, Bourbon and Blade Silver. The Sports Series completes the McLaren three tier model range, with the 540C Coupé priced from £126,000 (RM825,625) and 570S Coupé from £143,250 (RM938,657). Prices mentioned are void of duty and taxes.McLaren 570S Coupe (12)

CEO of McLaren Automotive, Mike Flewitt said, “The new Sports Series is aimed at a new audience for McLaren. It’s the first time we’ve competed in the sports car market as opposed to the supercar market. As with all McLaren models, we have prioritised performance, driving engagement and exhilaration. It is a totally driver-focused car, with excellent ergonomics and visibility, and a class-leading driving position. This is also the most day-to-day usable, practical and attainable McLaren we’ve ever made. It is a dramatic and beautiful sports car.”
