Toyota Camry Hybrid CKD: Exclusive first look of the first Japanese D-segment hybrid [+Video]

Rolling off the Toyota assembly plant in Shah Alam today is the new Toyota Camry, and as the title reads, a hybrid variant will join the model lineup this time around. Don’t be misled, because the event today wasn’t the launching of the Camry, but rather its line-off ceremony.

The star of the show here is in fact the Camry hybrid, and Toyota claims that the assembly plant is capable of producing up to 7,000 units of it in the coming nine months’ time before its eligibility to qualify for the Energy Efficient Vehicle (EEV) incentive expires. The new line that will facilitate the Camry’s (hybrid variant as well) production costs nearly RM180 million to prepare.

Now, the hybrid variant will be powered by a 2.5-litre four cylinder engine paired to an electric motor that produces a combined output of 202 hp and 270 Nm of torque. Only one transmission choice is available here – a CVT automatic, driving the front wheels. Its fuel tank is 65 litres big, and fuel consumption is 19.16 km per litre (claimed). Being a full hybrid, the car is capable of cruising in electric mode, but its exact range remains unknown for now.

Like we mentioned earlier, the new Camry isn’t launched yet, but it’s scheduled to make its official arrival sometime in the first week of April. Toyota also revealed that the Camry will not be priced above the RM200k mark, so it’ll be interesting to see how the hybrid will be positioned against some of its closest rivals. While we all look forward to its launch next week, enjoy the photo gallery we’ve prepared just for your viewing pleasure.
