Mazda unveils refreshed Mazda6, gets a mild update inside and out

Together with the CX-5 refresh, Mazda also worked on their flagship by giving it an update to the interior and exterior. The Mazda6 is already a handsome car to begin with, but Mazda still insists on keeping the Mazda6 fresh to take on the other D-segment contenders.

EXTERIOR

Similar to the CX-5, Mazda6 gets a new nose that consists of a new grille with thicker chrome ‘wings’ that extends to the Adaptive LED Headlights (ALH). The bumper has been reprofiled with a dash of chrome at the upper edge of the foglamp surround.

Other than that, there’s the new LED lighting signature for the taillamps, new design for the 19-inch wheels, and the addition of Sonic Silver Metallic and Titanium Flash Mica paint shades.

INTERIOR

Mazda has worked on the interior to lift the comfort and usability by using higher quality materials and fitting it with additional equipment. Black or sand beige fabric upholstery is standard but leather upholstery can be specified in either black or off-white.

The dashboard has been redesigned, with a free standing seven-inch center display in the middle, and a pop-up Head Up Display above the instrument binnacle. There’s the MZD Connect car connectivity system, and Active Driving Display that shows the vehicle speed and other important driving information such as that from the advanced safety systems in real time.

Mazda6 also adopts the new Electrical Parking Brake (EPB) that contributes to a cleaner center console. Rear occupants’ comfort are now boosted by the inclusion of heated seats (which is a first in a Mazda), as well as a powered rear sunshade.

PERFORMANCE

The engines used in the facelifted Mazda6 mirrors the CX-5, which includes the 2.0-liter SKYACTIV-G petrol with 158 hp or 163 hp, 2.5-liter SKYACTIV-G petrol with 189 hp, and a 2.2-liter SKYACTIV-D diesel with 148 hp or 173 hp mated to either a six-speed SKYACTIV-DRIVE automatic with Drive Selection or a six-speed SKYACTIV-MT manual transmission.

There’s also Mazda’s i-stop idling stop system and i-ELOOP brake energy regeneration system to help achieve a better fuel consumption. Ride and handling is said to be improved, with the updated front and rear damper structure together with the updated front lower arms bushings.

WHAT ELSE?

Mazda6 is also fitted with Mazda’s i-ACTIVSENSE advanced safety technologies that uses radars and cameras around the vehicle. They provide information for the Blind Spot Monitoring (BSM), Rear Cross Traffic Alert (RCTA), Mazda Radar Cruise Control (MRCC), and the new Lane-keep Assist System (LAS) to detect the surroundings.
