Mazda2 wins Germany’s illustrious 2014 Golden Steering Wheel Award

And so it continues to impress. The Mazda2, or known as Mazda Demio in Japan, has just added another prestigious award to its belt, this time by picking up the 2014 Golden Steering Wheel award in the small cars category all the way in Germany.

This achievement marks Mazda’s fourth Golden Steering Wheel title, three of which were won with the Mazda 323 in 1985 and 1989, and Mazda 626 in 1992.

Mazda’s Managing Executive Officer Takahisa Sori said, “It’s a great honour to receive this outstanding award for the all-new Mazda2, even before hitting the European shores. It’s wonderful to see that the key features that define Mazda vehicles, such as exceptional design, the fun-to-drive factor, and excellent environmental performance, are being recognised in Germany as well.”

The Golden Steering Wheel Award is an automotive award organised by a German Sunday newspaper Bild am Sonntag and automotive magazine Auto Bild. The awards first came about in 1976 and has gone on to become one of the country’s most prominent automotive awards.

The Mazda 2 was the only Japanese vehicle to walk away with an award in all the categories this year. It also won the 2014 Japan’s Car of the Year award.

Bermaz Motor held a brief preview of the Mazda2 in one of their roadshows earlier in October, where visitors learned that the car will be offered in both hatchback and sedan forms. It’s currently priced tentatively at RM85k for the hatchback and RM87k for the sedan, and both will be powered by the promising 1.5-litre Skyactiv-G engine, paired to Mazda’s six-speed Skyactiv-Drive automatic transmission.
