In conjunction with the 2014 Malaysian Motorcycle Grand Prix (MotoGP) held over this weekend, Shell Malaysia held a special preview of its most advanced motorcycle oil to date – the Shell Advance Ultra with PurePlus Technology.
What makes this the most advanced motorcycle oil lies in the methods in which it is processed. The Shell PurePlus Technology is the result of a 40-year research programme that converts natural gas into crystal-clear base oil with almost zero impurities such as those found in crude oil processes. This revolutionary process is called gas-to-liquid (GTL) process, and is produced at the Pearl GTL plant in Qatar.
Shell Malaysia’s Technology Manager for Shell Advanced, Mr Leo Kin Mun explained, “The GTL base oil is as clear as water in its purest state. When it goes on sale beginning January next year, the oil will be yellowish-gold in colour because of the additives we put into the oil. GTL base oil gives improved and more consistent viscosity as operating temperatures increase. It improves engine performance on the whole, enhancing friction and volatility performance compared to traditional crude-oil based engine oils.”
When asked if the engine oil is competition ready, Shell indicated that their riders for the 2015 season of the Shell Advance Asia Talent Cup will be using the Shell Advance Ultra oil in their race bikes. The move to introduce this high-grade engine oil is also to cater to the evident and rising growth of big capacity bikes in the country.
Shell recently conducted a trial run on several big-engine bikes whose riders traveled across Malaysia on a combination of trunk roads, hilly terrains and highways. This is to put the new synthetic oil to real world tests and get initial reactions from these riders. According to Shell, about 77 percent of the riders experienced smoother ride and more linear power delivery after running on the synthetic oil and Shell V-Power 97.
The Shell Avance Ultra with PurePlus Technology will be sold to the public from as early as January next year, with two viscosity grades to choose from: 10W-40 and 15W-50. Both oils are 100 percent fully synthetic.
