With the acquisition of Land Rover in 1994 by BMW, design and development began using Range Rover’s parts and technology to build the first SUV by BMW.  From there, the first generation X5 codenamed ‘E53’ was introduced in 1999, which became an instant hit and somewhat changed the SUV scene drastically.

Seven years later, its DNA was inherited by the second generation X5 (E70) except it had curvier lines and was equipped with newer technologies. The third and latest generation was then unveiled in September 2013 at Frankfurt International Motor Show.

“Since its original introduction in 1999, the BMW X5 has remained the uncontested market leader in the premium SAV segment to this day. It is a matter of fact that the BMW X5 is known as ‘The Boss!’ and we now welcome a new Boss in Malaysia,” said Dr. Gerhard Pils, Chief Executive Officer of BMW Group Malaysia.

Carved within the body of the F15 X5 are distinctive aerodymaic features to reduce drag, such as Air Curtains for the front apron, Air Breathers on the side walls and Aeroblades at the rear of the car. Then there’s the Air Blade on the D-pillar that makes the car look broader, and at the same time improves airflow. Both petrol and diesel models are fitted with 19-inch rims with different designs; Star-spoke and V-spoke respectively.

Interior
The cabin design creates a large space luxurious atmosphere with superior functionality. The Leather Dakota Terra upholstery, which is made exclusively for the all-new X5, provides the premium level of comfort and I have to say, the smell is addictive. On top of that, the interior lighting features LED technology that runs along the door panels and through the dashboard creating a lounge-like environment.

Interior trim does vary between the two models as the xDrive35i gets the Fine-wood American Oak trim while the xDrive30d has a sportier Oxide Silver Dark Matte trim. Continuing on with the differences, the petrol version gets the paddle shifters and third row seats, which the diesel variant doesn’t. Hence the xDrive35i can be a seven-seater with the additional seats on the third row.
